How was religion an important factor in the colonization of the americas

 Religion became very famous 1730s and 1740s. During this time, a religious revival called "The Great Awakening". In the Middle Colonies and New England, ministers called for a "new birth," a return to the strong faith in the earlier days. Jonathan Edwards of Massachusetts would give powerful sermons. George Whitefield, an English preacher, inspired worshipers in churches and open fields from New England to Georgia.

    The Great Awakening also led to the formation of new types of churches. These new churches placed emphasis on having personal faith then rather having to follow church rituals. A Baptist preacher noted after the Great Awakening, "the common people now claim as good a right to judge and act in matters of religion as civil rulers or the learned clergy."

    The Great Awakening as well united colonists from the north and south in a similar experience. The colonists overcame regional barriers, and this helped make way for a rapid spread in revolutionary and ideas and excitement during the struggle for independence.
