The biggest problem for the allies regarding the Atlantic Ocean was the fact that Britain needed to get supplies through the sea. Hence, the Germans tried to stop that by having submarines torpedo merchant ships. The struggle over the Atlantic lasted throughout the whole war but it was most intense during 1941-1943. The U-boats of the Germans were defeated mostly thanks to new technology and in part because the Allies used fighters to provide air support for their troops. New radars, new detection techniques, higher capabilities aircraft and better antisubmarine equipment were some of the developments that helped defeat the Nazi threat in the Atlantic.
