How did france and great britain respond when germany disobey the treaty of versailles?

Britain and France followed a policy of appeasement toward Germany when Germany violated the Treaty of Versailles by rearming and seeking to expand its territory.

The Treaty of Versailles had been very punitive toward Germany, limiting it to an army of no more than 100,000 men, a navy of only a few dozen ships (and no submarines), and an air force of no more than 100 unarmed search and rescue aircraft.  Hitler's rebuilding of the German military, in violation of the Versailles terms, actually began in secret in 1933 but went public in 1935.  By then Germany already had a 300,000 man army and over 2,000 war planes, with plans for additional buildup.
But as Hitler announced his rearming of Germany, Britain and France essentially did nothing to stop him.  They were struggling with their own problems as the Depression affected the whole world, and were not ready to pursue any war action against Germany.  In 1938, the British and French prime ministers even went as far as to sign the Munich Pact with Hitler, which granted him their permission to annex the Sudentland, a portion of Czechoslovakia which had a large German population.  It was not until Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939 that the British and French finally were ready to shift from an appeasement approach and declare war on Germany.
