I. On May 1, Frank, the manager of Maple Lake Summer Camp, entered into written
employment contracts with three students, Carla, Darla, and Marla, to work as camp
counselors for the summer. Each of the three employees had a written contract, with a threemonth period of employment starting June 1 and ending August 31, for a salary of $2000 per
month.
(a) Carla was 18 years old when she signed the employment contract. On August 1,
Frank orally offers to pay Carla a $1000 bonus for her work in June and July, because she
had done additional work in June and July that was not part of a camp counselor’s regular
duties. Carla accepts Frank’s offer with gratitude. The next day Frank tells Carla that he has
changed his mind and refuses to pay Carla the bonus. Carla sues Frank for breach of contract
to obtain the $1000 bonus. Who wins the lawsuit? Explain.
(b) Darla was 18 years old when she signed the employment contract. On August 1,
Darla asks Frank to raise her salary. Frank orally offers to increase Darla’s salary to $2,500
for August and Darla accepts Frank’s offer with gratitude. The next day, Frank tells Darla
that he has changed his mind and refuses to increase Darla’s salary. Darla sues Frank for
breach of contract. Who wins the lawsuit? Explain.
(c) Marla signed the employment contract on May 1, two weeks before her 18th
birthday, which is May 15. Marla works and receives her salary for the first month, from
June 1 to June 30. On July 1, she informs Frank that she disaffirms the contract, and she
quits. Frank sues Marla for breach of contract. Who wins the lawsuit? Explain.
