As a protest against overseas military action by the government, about 600 sign-carrying stu-
dents from a local school gathered peacefully
at a major road intersection. As curious drivers
slowed to observe, traffic came to a standstill.
Within minutes, the police moved in and forced
the crowd to break up. Several individuals who
dropped their signs and "went limp" on the
pavement were arrested. Did the police action
violate the protesters' First Amendment consti-
tutional right "peaceably to assemble"?
