the parallelogram gives you some information about the angles in the figure. for instance, knowing that it's a parallelogram tells you that cg and er are parallel. this allows you to use alternate interior angles to say angle c is congruent to angle bpe. you could then have used vertical angles to show that gbc and pbe are congruent. the aa postulate then tells you that triangle cbg and pbe are similar. this would have let you use proportions to solve for the missing side.
