How would you subtract from a negative

I'll use the example -5 - 2

To subtract, the easiest way for me to remember is just to temporarily ignore the negative sign in front of 5 and to add 5 and 2. You get 7, and just add a negative sign back in front of 7 and you get -7.

It's a lot easier if you try first on a number line so that you get the relationship between negatives first.
