Can someone explain what a vertical asymptote is

Ok so to find a vertical asymptote if I remember correctly you have to factor the denominator if it can be factored and make the factors equal to 0 and solve for the x... ill give an example if its too confusing

If the denominator is x^2+5x+6 you have to factor it first

x^2+5x+6
(x+3)(x+2)
Now the vertical asymptotes are -3,-2

Because -3+3 is 0 and zero times anything is 0
