The horizontal line of the graph displays years, beginning with 1970 and ending with 2007.
Deaths begin around 1 (100,000) in 1970 and begin to rise slightly to 1.5 by 1975. They dip back down after that, and in 1978, they are below 1. In 1979, the deaths begin a steady increase so that there is a dramatic curve in the graph, with the largest spikes happening around 2000 and 2006. By 2007, the deaths have reached just about 9.According to the chart, from 1986-1996, unintentional drug overdose deaths per 100,000 population began to rise.
