Find a functional element in your home that has a slope. It could be the grade of a driveway, the slope of a sewer line, or the rise and run of a staircase. Khianna used this wheelchair ramp:

Part 1: Describe the sloped element you have chosen. You can attach a photograph of it if you wish.

Measure the rise and the run of the sloped object you have chosen.

Rise:

Run:

Use the rise and run you measured to calculate the slope.

Slope:

Does the object you measured have a consistent slope throughout? If it does, you can prove it with similar triangles.

In a constant slope, all right triangles created by a section of the sloped line, and its rise and run over that distance, will be similar.

Look at the two similar triangles that Khianna made from her wheelchair ramp:

Here is the graph of the two triangles on the coordinate plane.

These two triangles are similar because the ramp has a consistent slope.

Part 2: Create two right triangles from your sloped element, and list their leg lengths below.

Triangle #1:

Leg #1 (rise):

Leg #2 (run):

Triangle #2:

Leg #1 (rise):

Leg#2 (run):

Graph the two triangles on the coordinate plane.

Are these two triangles similar?

If the triangles are similar, explain what this implies about your slope. If they are not, explain why this may be the case.
