-3 + (-9) + 2 = -3 - 9 + 2

                   = -12 + 2

                   = -10

-3     +     -9     +      2    = -10

5 + 7 + (-3) = 5 + 7 - 3

                   = 12 - 3

                   = 9

 5     +      7     +     -3     = 9

(3) + - = 21

5 + 7 - (-9) = 5 + 7 + 9

                   = 12 + 9

                   = 21
