Stella needs to fill a small pool with at least 35 gallons of water for her dog. There is currently 5 1/2 gallons of water in the pool.

If she is using a bucket that can hold 1 1/4 gallons of water, how many buckets of water, x, will she need to reach her goal? Select the inequality that shows the minimum number of buckets needed to fill the pool.

Write out the equation like this:

1 1/4x = (35 - 5 1/2)

It is this way because you are multiplying x amount by how many gallons you can hold. This needs to equal the amount that is needed, which is 35 in total but minus the amount that was already there.

I’m going to write this in decimal form from now on to make it easier to understand.

1.25x = 29.5

Divide both sides by 1.25 to get x on its own.

29.5/1.25 = 23.6

Not sure if it would want this in decimal form?? It says the minimum number of buckets so if we assume that is full buckets then you would need to round it to 24; but you can have 0.6 of the bucket so I’m not sure. It’s either 23.6 or 24.
