1. Rolling Hills Country Club wants to hold a charity golf tournament to benefit
foundation. Thirty-two players will be divided into eight teams of four that will then compete to
win prizes. The tournament director would like to create the teams of four in a way that doesn't
tend to favor any one team.

(a) One possibility for creating teams is to let people that usually play together during the year
play together on the same team for the tournament. Is this a good idea? Explain why or why
not.

(b) Two other possibilities for creating teams are
Method 1 (random assignment): Assign the 32 golfers to the eight teams at random
Method 2: Order the golfers by ability using their average score for the past 12 months.
Create four groups of golfers, with the first group consisting of the golfers ranked 1-8.
(the eight best golfers), the second group consisting of the golfers ranked 9-16, the
third group consisting of the golfers ranked 17-24, and the fourth group consisting of
the golfers ranked 25–32 (the eight worst golfers) Form the one team of four by
selecting one golfer at random from each of the four groups. Form the second team by
selecting one golfer at random from the remaining golfers in each group, and so on.
Which of these two methods is more likely to create teams that are comparable in terms of
ability? Explain your reasoning

(c) Describe how you would use a table of random numbers or a random number generator to
create the teams using the method you selected in part (b).
