The commutative property states that in addition or multiplication it doesn't matter what order you add/multiply the numbers in. For example, 3 + 2 is the same as 2 + 3  and 3 × 2 = 2 × 3.

The distributive property tells us how to solve multiplication problems with quantities in parentheses. For example, 2(3 + 5) = 2(3) + 2(5).

One difference between the two is that the commutative property deals with addition and multiplication whereas the distributive property only applies to multiplication.
