The planet Jupiter has a diameter of approximately 9 x 104 miles. Earth has a diameter of about 7,918 miles. Jupiter's circumference is about 279,118 miles, and
Earth's circumference is about 24,875 miles.
Part A: Use the expression for the approximation of the diameter of Jupiter as a model
to write approximations of the diameter of Earth and the circumferences of Earth and
Jupiter.
Part B: Use your answers from Part A to estimate how many times as long the
diameter of Jupiter is as the diameter of Earth and how many times as long the
circumference of Jupiter is as the circumference of Earth.
Part C: Usually, the diameters and circumferences of spheres are in proportion to
each other. For example, if one sphere's diameter is three times as long an another
sphere's diameter its circumference is also three times as long. Why do you think the
diameters and circumferences you found for Earth and Jupiter are not like this?
