Angles (7x+17)° and (5x-5)° are consecutive interior angles, that means they add up to 180°. 
So we can make an equation to solve for x, which eventually will help us solve for y. 
     180 = (7x+17) + (5x -5)

     re arrange that:
     180 = 7x + 5x + 17 - 5

     180 = 12x + 12
     - 12           -12

    168 = 12 x
      12    12

      14 = x

Now we will plug it into (5x - 5) to help us solve for y,
Angle (5x - 5) and (23y) are supplementary angles, meaning they equal to 180°. 
        180 = (23y) + (5(14) - 5)

        180 = (23y) + (70 - 5)

        180 = 23y + 65
        - 65           - 65

        115 = 23y
          23    23
