The forty law students at University of Memphis who will graduate in the next year were asked to observe a videotape of a crime. The students were randomly assigned to go into a room on the right or another room on the left. The twenty students in the room on the right attempted to choose the criminal seen in the movie from a lineup consisting of five people. The twenty students in the room on the left chose from a lineup consisting of ten people. Each of the subjects then judged their confidence in the person they selected as the criminal from 50% (no idea) to 100% (completely sure).
