Russian thistle, commonly found in the western United States, is the dried structure of certain plants that are blown by the wind. Bassia scoparia, a type of plant that turns into Russian thistle at the end of the warmer months, is a problem for farmers because it takes nutrients away from soil that would otherwise go to more beneficial plants. Scientists are concerned that bassia scoparia plants are becoming resistant to the most commonly used herbicide, glyphosate. In 2013, 17.74 percent of 62 randomly selected bassia scoparia plants were resistant to glyphosate. In 2018, 34.48 percent of 58 randomly selected bassia scoparia plants were resistant to glyphosate.
