En su luna de miel james joule puso aprueba la conversion de energia mecanica en energia interna al medir temperaturas de cascadas de agua. Si el agua en lo alto de una cascada suiza tenia una temperatura de 10.0°C y despues caía 50.0m ¿que temperatura maxima en el fondo podria esperar joule? No tuvo exito para medir el cambio de temperatura, en parte porque la evaporación enfriaba el agua que caía y tambien porque su termometro no era suficientemente sensible
