Read the passage below and answer the question. In the summer of 1787, a group of delegates gathered in Philadelphia. Their task was to create a constitution for the recently established United States of America. The group included leading figures such as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and James Madison, the main author of the Constitution. Two other important figures, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, were absent, serving as ambassadors in Europe. When the delegates completed their work, they had written a document that would endure for centuries. Today, the U. S. Constitution is the oldest written constitution still in use in the world, and it is the supreme law of the land. The Constitution created a republic with separated and balanced powers aimed at protecting both majority rule and minority rights. (Courtesy of Learning A-Z)
