X = amount of sugar transported;

y = amount charged by each company.

1st company: y = 6500 + 125.25x

2nd company: y = 5296 + 200.50x



For what amount of sugar do both companies charge the same?

y (1st company) = y (2nd company)

6500 + 125.25x = 5296 + 200.50x

6500 - 5296 = 200.50x - 125.25x

1204 = 75.25x

x = 1204/75.25

x = 16 tons

What is the cost when both companies charge the same?

Just substitute back for x = 16:

y = 6500 + 125.25 * 16

y = 6500 + 2004

y = $ 8504
