So you have to subtract the total paint with the paint he used and the paint left to find the paint he used for the birdhouse.

So the equation: 

total paint - 3/8+1/4(which can be also 2/8)+ 1/8= the paint he used for the birdhouse. 

then you add them together and the answer is 8/8 - 6/8 = 2/8

So the answer is 2/8 and if u simplify it it's 1/4 

He used 1/4 of the paint to paint the birdhouse.
