Surely, now that you're in middle school, you know that the volume of a cube is

               (the length of the edge)-cubed
OR
               (length of the edge) x (length of the edge) x (length of the edge) .

The length of the edge of the cube in the picture is 9-ft.
To find the volume of the cube, use the formula that I just reminded you of.

#2).
Twenty minus nine is written as  (20 - 9).
Seven is written as  (7) .
Their product is written as    (20 - 9) x (7) .

To find the value of the expression:

Do the subtraction inside the parentheses:    (20 - 9) = 11
So now the whole expression is
                                                     (11) x (7)
Now do the multiplication:
                                                       11  x  7  =  77
