Respiration is a metabolic process that is common in all living organisms. Carbon dioxide is a metabolic byproduct of cellular respiration. The cells takes up oxygen from the blood stream and discharges carbon dioxide, changing the blood from oxygenated form to carboxyhemoglobin or deoxygenated blood. The deoxygenated blood is transferred to the lungs via network of blood vessels called as capillaries. From the capillaries the deoxygenated blood is converted into oxygenated blood, on receiving the oxygen in the breathing process. The carbon dioxide is expelled out from the body being transferred from capillary to alveoli to bronchi to trachea to larynx and finally released through nostrils.
