Experimenting with Lines and Line Segments Part A
Open the line translation application. The right line is a translation of the left line 4 units to the right. Drag the left line and try to move it on top of the right line. Are these lines the same? What does this mean about how a line changes when you translate it?
Part B
Open the line rotation application. The right line is a 90° clockwise rotation of the left line about the origin. Click the 90° clockwise button. Are these lines the same? What does this mean about how a line changes when you rotate it?
Part C
Open the line reflection application. The right line is a reflection across the y-axis of the left line. Click the reflect over y-axis button. Are these lines the same? What does this mean about how a line changes when you reflect it?
Part D
Open the line segment translation application. Line segment AB is a translation of line segment CD 6 units down. Drag line segment CD and try to move it onto line segment AB. Are line segments AB and CD the same? What does this mean about how a line segment changes when you translate it?
Part E
Open the line segment rotation application. Line segment AB is a 90° rotation counterclockwise of line segment CD. Click the 90° counterclockwise button. Are line segments AB and CD the same? What does this mean about how a line segment changes when you rotate it?
Part F
Open the line segment reflection application. Line segment AB is a reflection of line segment CD across the x-axis. Click the reflect over x-axis button. Are line segments AB and CD the same? What does this mean about how a line segment changes when you reflect it?
Part G
Using the same application you used in Part F, reflect the line segment across the x-axis. Then, rotate it 90° clockwise. Finally, translate it down 2 units. What is the relationship between the original line segment and the transformed line segment? If you transform a line segment with a sequence of reflections, rotations, or translations, is it still a line segment?
