Those providing assistance must first determine if the person is breathing. Then, they must scan for bleeding and monitor for shock.

There are three basic steps to follow when performing first aid. First, before treating an injured person, it is important to understand the cause and extent of the wounds. Then, proceed by examining the person from head to toe while determining the best course of treatment. Last, arrange for the person to be transported to a local hospital.
