In a study of the effects of cognitive training on memory, 60 participants are recruited, run in a session where they are given a 10-page Wedding story to remember, and then tested. The participants are randomly assigned to one of three conditions: a) 20 subjects participate in a Memory Improvement Training program during the session, b) 20 subjects are given exercises that do not improve memory (i. e., focusing on a white board), but are told that the exercises are meant to help their memory, c) and 20 subjects receive no training during the session, but they are given the Memory Improvement Training program after the tests have been completed. All the participants are tested on the number of facts that they recall from the Wedding story and on accuracy of recall, measured by the number of errors in their reports.
