A CSU biologist is on a team of scientists that studying Ticks. In the study, citizen scientists mail in ticks and the team maps where the ticks are from and performs tests to determine what disease causing pathogens the ticks are carrying. The scientists used qPCR to determine if each pathogen was present. The scientists assumed the ticks had no pathogens and proceeded to test each tick for each pathogen. If the scientists could detect the DNA molecule amplification before the 40th cycle, they claimed that the tick carried that pathogen. The scientists determined that the tick currently being studied carried Babesia micrur since they detected the associated DNA molecule amplification after the 34th cycle. In truth, this tick did not carry Babesia microt: -
