There is a formula that relates the height of an object shot straight up into the air and the elapsed time after the launch. This formula does not take into account air
resistance. The formula is h = –16t? + vt +c, where h is the height of the object
in feet, t is time in seconds, v is the initial upward velocity, and c is the initial height.
Mr. Gerard is a fireworks expert. He sets up a row of starburst rockets on a platform 5
feet above the ground. He fires a rocket straight up with an initial upward velocity of
116 feet per second. The starburst is designed to explode as soon as the rocket
reaches 185 feet.
• Write an equation that can be solved to find the amount of time it takes for the
rocket to reach a height of 185 feet.
Solve the equation for t.
• Describe the path of the rocket, using the value or values of t you found.
