First let t = total # of ribbons
Now if one third of the total ribbons is red, then two thirds of the total ribbons are blue and green ribbons combined.

We are told that the ratio of blue to green ribbons is 2:5... Let b = #of blue ribbons and g = # of green ribbons: then

Or: 2g = 5b and therefore this will be our first equation of the system.

We are also told that there are 162 fewer blue ribbons than green. So it follows that our second equation of the system will be b + 162 = g

Substituting our first equation into the second we get the following:
Solving this equation, we find g = 270

Now g = 270 implies that: b + 162 = 270 and b = 108
Also the sum of blue ribbons and green ribbons is now 378 which is of the total number of ribbons.

Thus, and solving we find t = 567
