3. a garden is going to be built in the city park in the shape of a parallelogram with a rectangular walkway through it. the garden region is shown below. find the area of the garden region by finding the areas of the in dividual shapes shown in the figure

Ok so the area of the triangle on the left would be:
A = (1/2)*bh
A = (1/2)*30*78
= 15*78
= 1170 ft^2

Now since the shape is a parallelogram, the two triangles should have the same area (imagine taking off the triangle on the left and sticking it next to the triangle on the right - this will form a rectangle made up of the two triangles)

So area of the garden = 1170*2 = 2340 ft^2
