If the wind is pushing a boat to the east and the boats motor is pushing the boat to the north, which direction will the boat move

The boat will move in a direction that's somewhere between North and East.  The exact direction will depend on how the speed of the wind compares to the speed of the boat through the water.

the independent variable, the one that is intentionally manipulated, is whether or not the car hits the barrier.

the dependent variable, the one that you measure the response in, is the distance that the washers travel.
