Gravity is the pulling force on the skydiver while air resistance is the pushing force. If there were no air resistance, the skydiver would fall straight to the ground and may not have enough time to pull the parachute, and if there were no gravity, the skydiver would probably just float in place (weird, right?) The force of gravity is stronger than the air resistance, however. That's why the skydiver will fall out of the plane toward the ground. Once the parachute is deployed, there is more area for air resistance to take hold. The parachute will slow the skydiver to make for a much safer landing.
