Ph is an indicator of how acidic or basic a substance is. the ph scale ranges from 0 - 14, with 7 representing neutral. acids have a ph below 7; bases, a ph greater than 7. scientists determine the ph of a substance by using an indicator; indicators change color depending on the ph of a substance. different indicators work at different ph ranges, as seen in the table above. the transition range of an indicator is the range of ph when the indicator changes from its low-ph color to its high-ph color. if the indicator shows a color between the two, then the ph lies somewhere in that transition range.
student groups are given an unknown liquid to test using the four indicators. one group conducts the tests and records these results.
color changes - ph indicators
indicator used color produced
methyl violet bluish
bromophenol blue yellow
phenolphthalein colorless
thymolphthalein colorless
using the table of indicator values, determine the approximate ph of the unknown solution.

In a steady-flow steam power plant system, two adiabatic high-pressure and low-pressure turbines ane used to generate power. superheated steam enters the high-pressure turbine at 8 mpa and 550°c. the steam expands in the high-pressure turbine to a saturated vapor at 3 mpa. in order to increase the powe generation of the power plant, another steam turbine working in a lower pressure ranges is deployed. the outlet vapor from the first turbine is heated up at a boiler to the temperature of 500 c at the constant pressure of first turbine's outlet (3 mpa). then, the vapor enters the second turbine and produces extra work. the exit conditions of the second turbine are 5o kpa and 90 percent quality. if the total power output of the power plant is 25 mw, determine a) the mass flow rate of the water (kg/s). b) heat transfer rate in the boiler (mw). It may seem strange that the selected velocity does not depend on either the mass or the charge of the particle. (for example, would the velocity of a neutral particle be selected by passage through this device? ) the explanation of this is that the mass and the charge control the resolution of the device--particles with the wrong velocity will be accelerated away from the straight line and will not pass through the exit slit. if the acceleration depends strongly on the velocity, then particles with just slightly wrong velocities will feel a substantial transverse acceleration and will not exit the selector. because the acc
