Positronium is a hydrogen-like "atom" that consists of a positron and an electron revolving around each other. a positron is the electron's antiparticle, which has the same mass as the electron, and the same magnitude, but opposite sign, of charge as the electron. use the bohr model to determine the following for positronium.
(a) what is the distance between the electron and the positron in the ground state of positronium?
(b) let d be the ground state distance between the two particles found in part (a). find an expression for the distance r between the electron and positron in any state, in terms of d and n, where n=1, 2, 3,
(c) what is the ground state total energy of positronium (in ev)?
(d) let b be the absolute value of the ground state energy of positronium found in part (c). find an expression for the energy e of positronium in any state, in terms of b and n, where n = 1, 2, 3,
(e) what if? we could imagine a "balmer series" for positronium that, as for hydrogen, would correspond to photons emitted when the system transitioned to n = 2 from higher states. what would be the wavelength (in nm) of the photon emitted by positronium for a transition from n = 3 to n = 2?
