The ATP molecule (Adenosine triphosphate) is known as the energy-storing molecule in biological systems. Its structure consists in an adenosine nucleoside bonded to three phosphoryl groups, as you can see in the attached image. In ATP the bonds between the phosphoryl groups are high energy bonds, which means that the electrons in that bond are in a high energy state, so if that bond gets broken, those electrons would pass from the high energy state to a lower energy state, and in order to get to that lower energy state they would have to release energy. What usually occurs is that in presence of water (H2O), the ATP molecule gets hydrolyzed and one of the phosphoryl groups is liberated and turned into phosphate molecule (the P-O bond was broken and the energy was released), so the ATP molecule becomes an ADP molecule.
