The smaller the distance between the planet and the Sun, the stronger the Sun's gravitational pull on it, and the faster the planet moves in its orbit.

Conversely, if the larger the distance between the planet and the Sun, the weaker the Sun's gravitational pull on it, and the slower the planet moves due to change in the direction of the Sun's gravitational pull on the planet.

Thus, the speed of a planet decrease as it moves away from the sun due to change in the direction of the sun’s pull relative to the planet’s motion.
