Two identical masses on a horizontal plane slide along the x and y axes, respectively. Each is connected to the origin by an identical spring with force constant κ. They are also connect to each other by a third spring with a different force constant and a length that makes it unstressed when the other two springs are unstressed. Calculate the normal modes and normal coördinates for this system.
