In fair weather, the electric field in the air at a particular location immediately above the Earth's surface is 120 N/C directed downward. (a) What is the surface charge density on the ground? Is it positive or negative? (b) Imagine the surface charge density is uniform over the planet. What then is the charge of the whole surface of the Earth? (c) What is the Earth's electric potential due to this charge? (d) What is the difference in potential between the head and the feet of a person 1.75 m tall? (Ignore any charges in the atmosphere.) (e) Imagine the Moon, with 27.3% of the radius of the Earth, had a charge 27.3% as large, with the same sign. Find the electric force the Earth would then exert on the Moon. (f) State how the answer to part (e) compares with the gravitational force the Earth exerts on the Moon.

A5 foot by 5 foot box culvert is buried 6 feet beneath the surface of the ground. a crosssection of this very long culvert (into and out of the page) is illustrated below. assume that the soil in which the culvert is buried has the following properties: jt = 120 pcf, w = 12%, ko = 0.50, ka = 0.33, and kp = 3.00. calculate the total horizontal force per unit length of culvert (fh) felt on one of the vertical faces of the culvert.

Ametal ring 4.20 cm in diameter is placed between the north and south poles of large magnets with the plane of its area perpendicular to the magnetic field. these magnets produce an initial uniform field of 1.12 t between them but are gradually pulled apart, causing this field to remain uniform but decrease steadily at 0.240 t/s . (a) what is the magnitude of the electric field induced in the ring? (b) in which direction (clockwise or counterclockwise) does the current flow as viewed by someone on the south pole of the magnet?

Two charged particles, q1 and q2, are located on the x-axis, with q1 at the origin and q2 initially at x1 = 12.2 mm. in this configuration, q1 exerts a repulsive force of 2.62 µn on q2. particle q2 is then moved to x2 = 18.0 mm. what is the force (magnitude and direction) that q2 exerts on q1 at this new location? (give the magnitude in µn.)
