Consider two identical objects released from rest high above the surface of the earth (neglect air resistance for this question). In Case 1 we release an object from a height above the surface of the earth equal to 1 earth radius, and we measure its kinetic energy just before it hits the earth to be K1.
In Case 2 we release an object from a height above the surface of the earth equal to 2 earth radii, and we measure its kinetic energy just before it hits the earth to be K2.
Compare the kinetic energy of the two objects just before they hit the surface of the earth.
K2 = 2 K1
K2 = 4 K1
K2 = (4/3) K1
K2 = (3/2) K1

(a) what are the magnitude and direction of the velocity of the red glider after the collision? magnitude 3.33 m/s correct: your answer is correct. direction correct: your answer is correct. (b) is this collision elastic?

The sun’s mass is 2.0×10^ 30 kg, its radius is 7.0×10 5 km, and it has a rotational period of approximately 28 days. if the sun should collapse into a white dwarf of radius 3.5×10 3 km, what would its period be if no mass were ejected and a sphere of uniform density can model the sun both before and after?
