Beta decay is the process by which a neutron decays to a proton (which typically stays in the original nucleus) an electron, and neutrino (if we’re being technical, this is an electron-antineutrino). This is one of the processes by which a heavy nucleus with many neutrons can move back towards stability. Carbon-14 decays to Nitrogen-14 via this process. The electron and neutrino are emitted in opposite directions. The electron momentum is 1.1 x 10-22 kg m/s and the neutrino has a momentum of 5.4 x 10-23 kg m/s. a. What is the linear momentum of the nucleus after the decay? Take the electron direction to be in the positive x-direction.
b. If the mass of the residual nucleus is 2.34 x 10-26 kg, then what is the kinetic energy (in Joules) of the recoiling nucleus? In real life, the recoiling nucleus and the electron would be measured, allowing one to infer the momentum of the neutrino (this incidentally was the reason the existence of the neutrino was proposed).

Calculate the minimum energy required to remove one proton from the nucleus 126c. this is called the proton-removal energy. (hint: find the difference between the mass of a 126c nucleus and the mass of a proton plus the mass of the nucleus formed when a proton is removed from 126c.) express your answer with the appropriate units. emin e m i n = nothing nothing request answer part b how does the proton-removal energy for 126c compare to the binding energy per nucleon for 126c, calculated using eb=(zmh+nmn−azm)c2?

One kind of e-book display consists of millions of very small spheres that float in a thin fluid layer between two conducting transparent plates. each sphere is black on one side and white on the other, and possesses an electric dipole moment directed from the white side to the black. when an electric field is applied between the plates, the spheres rotate so that their dipole moment lines up with the field. depending on the fields direction, either the black or the white sides of th espheres can be made visible.the dipole moment of the spheres can be modeled as two opposite charges of magnitude 3.5 x 10^-15 c, separated by a distancce of 100 micrometers (um). what is the maximum possible torque on a sphere if the electric field between the transparent plates is 4.0 x 10^5 n/c
