Using two cars driving in the same direction, one blaring its horn and a second car carrying an observer. Students have been asked to develop a model showing that they can negate the Doppler Effect. How could they use the two cars to demonstrate that the Doppler Effect does NOT occur?

The model using two cars is very simple. It will also involve the use of a recording machine.

Whilst the sound is being recorded, one model will involve the two cars traveling at approximately the same speed in the same direction with Car A blaring its horn.

They have to repeat the same experiment but this time, the two cars traveling apart from each other at approximately the same speed

The third will entail Car A being stationary and blaring the horn whilst Car B travels towards it all the while recording.

The recorder will be able to demonstrate the Doppler effect does NOT occur.

Doppler Effect refers to the apparent change in sound waves as an observer moves closer or farther from its source.

For example, the definition states that it is apparent which means that the source of the sound does not change the frequency of the sound waves. The sound waves appear to have a higher pitch the closer the source of the sound is to the observer and a lower pitch the farther away the source of the sound is to the observer.
