ssignment Directions: In this project, you are going to look behind historical hypotheses, and examine their development. You will choose 3 scientific ideas that were once accepted as valid but later found to be incorrect. Choose 1 from these 3: Spontaneous generation, the eruption of life from inanimate material Phlogiston, the invisible substance that makes things burn Geocentrism: Earth as the center of the universe Chose 2 from these 5: Einstein’s static universe The blank slate theory of the human mind (tabula rasa) The discovery of the planet Vulcan Miasmatic theory of disease Lumeniferous aether For each one, provide: a historical summary of when and how the idea came to be (100 to 250 words the best hypothesis you can find that captures the idea what scientific activity eventually refuted the hypothesis (brief, just the facts) an analysis of what was wrong with the hypothesis, and why Assignment Guidelines: Under each item above, list all web-sites and sources you consult for each idea, but be sure that all your writing is original. For 1a, start with the 2 relevant “top 10” web sites in the references list. Go beyond these if you need to. For 1b, style the hypothesis the way you learned in this Lesson. For 1c, do a simple Internet search, and summarize the information you find with tight and concise writing. For 1d, try to answer this from your own understanding of the issue, without reference to another source. Write in a straightforward fashion, be logical and as concise as possible (250 to 400 words for each). Submission Requirements: You will write and submit a total of three summaries, based on your selections from the two lists. Be scrupulous about sources used; include all sources you consulted, and do not improperly copy text from any. Submit your three summaries including when and how the idea came to be, the best hypothesis you can find that briefly captures the idea what scientific activity eventually refuted the hypothesis, and an analysis of what was wrong with the hypothesis, and why.
