In heart transplant the donor is hundreds or even thousands of miles away from the recipient, so it is important to quickly preserve the heart to prevent damage of the tissue during the journey. This is done by submerging the heart in a saline solution as packing inside a commercial cooler. The heart can be geometrically approximated by a solid, finite cylinder having radius and height 4cm and 9cm respectively and uniform thermal properties. The thermal diffusivity of the heart is 1.5*10-7 m2/s, its initial temperature 37C and the temperature of the saline solution is 28C and it can be assumed that the saline temperature does not vary. (1)Find the temperature at the center of the heart after 3 hours assuming the heart as an infinite cylinder. (2)Recalculate the temperature at the center for a finite cylinder with the dimensions given. (3)Compare and discuss results obtained in (1) and (2).
