Magnets can be used to solve many engineering design issues. The Maglev Train, built in England in 1984 to transport people between Birmingham Airport and Birmingham International Railway station, uses magnets as an alternative energy source. Two magnetic coils run along the sides of the train track. One controls the lift, or levitation of the train while the other controls the train's propulsion.
