The fuel rod of a nuclear reactor is a solid cylinder of diameter 10 cm, with an outer cylinder of diameter 20 cm. The thermal conductivity of the inner cylinder is 3.0 and that of the outer cylinder is 0.5 W/mK. Energy is generated at the rate of 80,000 W/m3 uniformly in the inner cylinder due to nuclear reaction. There is no energy generation in the outer cylinder. At the outer surface of the outer cylinder, heat transfer is lost by convection to a fluid at 300 K with a heat transfer coefficient of 20 W/m2K. Calculate the temperature at the center of the inner cylinder and that at the interface between the two cylinders. Assume steady state one-dimensional, radial, conduction.
