The Nasca lines were discovered in Peru in the 1920s. They were created by the Nasca people more than 2,000 years ago. The Nasca lines are geoglyphs. Geoglyphs are ancient line drawings on the ground. The Nasca geoglyphs are so large that people could not see the pictures until planes flew over them. About 300 geoglyphs have been discovered. Researchers have different ideas about the possible reasons the Nasca people made the geoglyphs. Some think the lines were for irrigation purposes. Others think the lines were for spiritual purposes. Research suggests that the Nasca lines were used for both purposes. Water was scarce in the region. It was likely considered a gift from the gods.
