Causes Effect Fishing boats may be taking too many small fish from the Ocean • Climate change could be altering the food chain. Terns in Trouble Life at the Arctic tern nesting grounds can be tough. Gulls eat eggs and steal nests. Foxes prowl. To create safe places for Arctic terns, scientists in Maine have created predator-free islands. People patrol the islands and keep predators away. But now terns on Maine's islands are facing new trouble. Their numbers have dropped. Declines have also happened in Iceland and the Netherlands. What is going on? The problem may be lack of food. Terns need small fish to feed their chicks. But fishing boats may be taking too many small fish from the ocean. Climate change could also be altering the food chain. Without enough fish near the nesting grounds, ter chicks can't survive. Maine scientists hope to help by creating more safe islands. That way, if food is scarce in one place, Arctic terns will have somewhere else to nest. Scientists hope this Arctic tern nest will be safe on a predator-free island in Maine.
