When helen keller was 19 months old, she got sick and lost her sight and hearing. with the of her lifelong teacher and assistant, anne sullivan, keller learned to read, write, and speak. her accomplishments as a deaf and blind person inspired millions. she believed that "true sight and hearing are within, not without."
most people never meet even one president. helen keller met every united states president from grover cleveland to john kennedy. that's a dozen presidents! she met her first president, grover cleveland, when she was only seven years old.
helen keller wanted to go to college. some people didn't believe women should go to college. and others thought it would be impossible for a blind and deaf person. but keller was determined. she attended radcliffe college and worked hard. her long-time teacher and , anne sullivan, went with her. sullivan attended all of keller's classes. she used the manual alphabet to share the lectures with keller. she also keller with her homework by reading books to her that weren't available in braille. many of the other students had never met a deaf and blind person. at the time, many people believed that people with disabilities, like deafness or blindness, weren't intelligent enough to go to college. keller change people's thoughts about people with disabilities.
she and sullivan must have been really busy at radcliffe because keller also wrote her book, the story of my life, while she was there. in 1904, 24 year old helen keller graduated with honors. she had fulfilled her dream and had showed the world what a determined deaf and blind woman could do.
during her life, keller used her fame to promote causes she believed in, like the american foundation for the blind. she took every opportunity to meet important people and talk to them about these causes.
