According to Kant, individuals need to lead lives in quest for flexibility, which he characterizes as influencing utilization of open to reason. The enlightened individual is discerning and independent, tolerating nothing without a reason, never acting without a reason, continually seeking after his or her opportunity and the flexibility of others. 
Enlightenment is man's rising up out of his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the powerlessness to utilize one's own particular comprehension without another's direction. This nonage is deliberate if its motivation lies not in absence of seeing but rather in hesitation and absence of strength to utilize one's own psyche without another's direction.
